Just a few years into his musical education, composer Camilo Aybar tackles his first symphony: a sprawling reflection of the COVID-19 pandemic. Is music, alone, strong enough to break the spell of enduring isolation?
Camilo Aybar was still in high school when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and changed life as he knew it. An emerging clarinetist and classical composer, Aybar’s unique approach to coping with the isolation was to write his first symphony. The resulting piece, containing 5 movements which each focus on a different stage of the pandemic, caught the attention of music professionals around the world, and was performed by the Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra in Oregon. The Sound of the Pandemic is an intimate and hopeful look at how music can carry us through even the most severe moments of cultural unrest - and how it’s often young people who will lead the charge.
