Two Indigenous teenagers on the brink of adulthood find escape from their troubled lives when they find each other through a summer of love on the Pow-Wow circuit.
17-year-old Jinny finds herself caught between her aspirations of becoming a contemporary dancer, and the crushing expectations of her mother Cara, Chief of the Coyote Lake Tribe. Navigating this difficult time of transition and finding her own voice, Jinny agrees to spend her last summer before university on the Pow Wow circuit with her mother. On the nearby White Bluff Indian Reserve, 17-year-old Riley is struggling with his single alcoholic father Miles. An opportunity to escape comes when his uncle Luke agrees to let Riley come live with him in Vancouver. But first, the two will hit the Pow Wow circuit. As soon as Jinny and Riley’s paths cross, the two are instantly mesmerized by each other. Just as their whirlwind romance is beginning to flourish, Cara’s health takes a nosedive, and she blames the young couple’s budding romance. Caught between guilt and love, loyalty and hope for her future, Jinny is faced with an impossible decision. Will she submit to her mother’s wishes and prioritize her family’s health, or forge her own path and go after what her heart desires?
